" Charlie: 'And he said that meens Im doing something grate for sience and Ill be famus and my name will go down in the books. I dont care so much about beeing famus. I just want to be smart like other pepul so I can have lots of frends who like me.'" (Keyes) Flowers For Algernon By: Daniel Keyes
Summary
Charlie Gordon, a mentally retareded adult, was chosen to undergo surgery to boost his intelligence. This 32 year old man was chosen for this experiment because Alice Kinnian, his teacher at the Beekman College Center for Retarded Adults, thought his eagerness to learn was perfect for the experiment. Charlie's doctors, Dr.Strauss and Dr.Nemur, had him keep journals that recorded his thoughts. In the beginning of these progress reports that Charlie wrote, his grammar, spelling, and punctuation was very poor. For part of the experiments Charlie had to compete with a mouse named Algernon, and complete mazes. While Algernon ran though a maze, Charlie did the same thing but with a piece of paper and pencil. Once Charlie goes through the surgery, his intelligence increases after a few days. The same results occurred when Algernon went through surgery. After Algernon's intelligence was very high, it started to detioriorate. The scientists weren't sure if the same thing was going to happen to Charlie. To find out if Charlie keeps his high intelligence, read on.
Flowers for Algernon is an outstanding book because it inspires. It inpires to get through life, overcome obstacles, and to try your best, even in the worst situations. Charlie shows determination to learn. When he undergoes the surgery and becomes intelligent, he does his best to learn as much as he can. Charlie also suffered depression and anger. But, he overcame this obstacle.
I would reccomend this book to others because it's a heart-warming story. Even though it is a melonchally story, it is very interesting. This book is also a great way to show people how hard it is to go through life being mentally retarded.
This story is outstanding. It is outsanding because when Charlie discovers that he's not going to stay intelligent forever, it's an emotional break through for him. This book is emotional and inspirational. Even when Charlie was feeling down, Alice was there to cheer him up.
